Do you want to study abroad but worried that your class or academic qualification might hinder you? In this post, I share information on how one can study abroad with a third class or HND. I concentrate on the UK, US and Canada. First take a look at the different degree classifications below:
First-Class Honors (First or 1st)
Upper Second-Class Honors (2:1, 2.i)
Lower Second-Class Honors (2:2, 2.ii)
Third-Class Honors (Third or 3rd)
Pass
Fail
A Higher National Diploma (HND) qualification uses studying and practical elements to prepare students for a particular job and/or career. In most countries, HND's equivalent is a foundation degree, or the first two years of a Bachelor’s degree. Usually, most universities will accept HND holders to begin their studies in level 300. Some can be incorporated in Master's programs but they will usually spend more time as compared to a degree holder.
Graduating with a third class does not mean the end of the world. Different reasons contribute to low academic performance. As such, we should be very careful not to categorize all students with third class as bad students.
Undoubtedly, it can be difficult to study abroad with a third class but it is not an impossibility. Many universities around the world would probably not state directly that they accept third class but there are many avenues put in place to ensure that students with lower academic grades are able to further their education.
The UK has Pre-Masters programs that allow students with HND or third class to be enrolled for 6 months or a year before they can officially begin their masters program. Post-graduate diplomas are also another route for third class and HND holders to pursue master’s education.
In the US, there are specific institutions that accept third class and HND for masters programs. However, you might be required to have very good scores in GMAT/GRE/SAT exam before you can be considered for Masters admission. Furthermore, your work experience is also considered if relevant to your study.
Canada does not have a track record of allowing third class and HND holders to pursue master’s education. Usually, it is advisable to apply for top-up undergraduate programs in Canada with third class or HND. However, studying in Canada has great advantages so students who might sponsor their own studies are likely to get jobs after school to be able to pay back their student loans.
Remember, your class or qualification does not affect your ability to secure a visa to study. If the designated or accredited study institution grants you an offer, your ability to get a visa to travel depends on how you package your visa application.
